Creating global agendas (About SDGs)
The concern around creating a set of goals to monitor and assist the development of countries has a background history, and anterior efforts corresponding to Sustainable Development Goals had happened before. Although SDGs are a robust and consistent set of goals, they are not the only example of nations’ cooperation to address issues. The Habitat conference of 1976 was the first attempt to organize ideas towards a global concept of environment preservation, resulting in the initiation of UN-Habitat program. Previous agendas comparable to the SDGs were the Agenda 21 and the Millennium Development Goals, both strongly influenced by the idea of international commitment and partnership between countries. It is clear, then, that the constitution of a body of international goals was not established only at the time SDGs were conceived.
